Cancer Diagnostics Stage
  • Head and neck cancer is the eighth commonest cancer in the UK

  • Over half are caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV)

  • Analysis of plasma cell-free DNA - or liquid biopsy - can be used as a minimally invasive test for diagnosis and surveillance in head and neck cancer

  • We show that liquid biopsy analysis of plasma HPV is highly concordant with traditional tissue-based testing for HPV at  diagnosis of head and neck cancer and can predict and diagnose recurrence before clinical presentation or diagnosis by imaging

  • Liquid biopsy is a valuable addition to traditional means of managing head and neck cancer
