Alvis Brazma is a Scientist Emeritus at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) – an intergovernmental research organization and Europe’s flagship life sciences laboratory. He has a PhD in Computer science. Since 1997 he has been working at the European Bioinformatics Institute of EMBL, where until mid 2024 he was heading the OMICs Section and was overseeing a number of international core bioinformatics resources, such as European Nucleotide Archie, European Genome-phenome Archive, and Gene Expression Atlas. He has been active advocate for biomedical data sharing since early 2000s, in particular, he was the author of the microarray data sharing standards MIAME. Dr. Brazma has led and participated in many international research projects on topics ranging from building new biology data resources, to applications of bioinformatics to cancer data analysis. He has published over 200 scientific papers, and he is an author of a recent book – Living Computers.
