I am a Professor of Neuroinflammation at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where I am a group leader and a head of the Division of Neuro at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience. My group’s vision is to explain how the epigenome integrates instructions from genetic and lifestyle factors that render immune cells aggressive and brain cells vulnerable in persons affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This work builds on my expertise in experimental and human genetics, functional genomics and epigenetics (the latter acquired during my postdoc at the University of Cambridge, UK). We utilize state-of-the-art molecular and analytical methods to elucidate functional states of discrete cells in unique clinical cohorts, followed by functional studies in advanced experimental models, with the goal to understand the mechanisms underlying neuro-axonal loss in MS and to improve disease management through novel treatments and biomarkers.
