Jinyu Shan (Jay Jay) is a highly skilled microbiologist with extensive experience in academia and industry. He specializes in medical microbiology, molecular marker discovery, phage therapy, infectious diseases, particularly Lyme and tick-borne diseases, and molecular diagnostics. Jinyu excels in communicating complex scientific concepts in plain English, enhancing impact and raising awareness. Jinyu began his journey in China, earning a Bachelor's in Industrial Microbiology from Shandong University and a Master's in Applied Microbiology from Nankai University. He completed his PhD in Molecular Microbiology at the University of Warwick, UK. Post-PhD, Jinyu joined the University of Leicester, focusing on phage therapy and antimicrobial resistance. He pioneered phage-based biomarker research for diagnosing Lyme and tick-borne diseases, resulting in publications and a patent, positively impacting the Lyme community. In industry, Jinyu has led operations and research under ISO standards, developing diagnostic tests. At Marker Diagnostics UK Ltd, he developed biomarkers for early concussion diagnosis and participated in the BBSRC ICURe programme, showcasing his ability to translate research into commercial success. Jinyu has contributed significantly as a judge for the LymeX Diagnostics Prize, collaborating with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He has served as a guest editor for special issues on phage therapy and tick-borne diseases in journals like Frontiers in Microbiology and Pathogens. As an independent consultant, Jinyu offers expertise in molecular diagnostics, clinical microbiology, and infectious disease diagnosis, navigating complex regulatory environments and leading interdisciplinary teams to drive innovation and commercialisation.
