Josie uses genomics to investigate how the lung microbiome evolves and adapts over time and how this affects health and drives disease. Her research seeks to develop novel bioinformatic and laboratory approaches to understand how the respiratory microbiome changes over time in people with chronic lung conditions and use this information to improve treatment. Josie completed her PhD on the genomic evolution of pathogenic mycobacteria in 2014, with a focus on understanding the transmission of M. tuberculosis and Mycobacterium abscessus. She then worked on direct sequencing of M. tuberculosis at UCL for two years before commencing a Henry Wellcome fellowship at the University of Cambridge studying the within-host evolution of cystic fibrosis pathogens. Josie established her lab at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in 2021.
