Tim Aitman

Director of the Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine, University of Edinburgh

Professor Tim Aitman is Director of the Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine and Professor of Molecular Pathology and Genetics at the University of Edinburgh, and Consultant Physician in NHS Lothian. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London and Edinburgh, and Regional Champion for Scotland and Council Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He was Specialist Advisor for the 2009 House of Lords Inquiry in Genomic Medicine. From 2015, he led the Scottish Genomes Partnership, a nationally important collaboration with the NHS and Genomics England. In 2022, he founded the community network One Health Genomics Edinburgh, now an interdisciplinary network of over 800 genomics researchers within the University of Edinburgh. 

 

Professor Aitman’s research uses genome technology and information to develop innovative approaches to diagnosis and management of rare and common diseases, including liquid biopsy analyses in cancer, and to translate these advances into routine healthcare for patient benefit.
