Alex Mentzer

Alex Mentzer is an academic clinician, Group Leader and Consultant in Infectious Diseases at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on understanding how human genetic variation influences susceptibility to, and outcomes from, infectious diseases. His group combines modern genomics, transcriptomics and immunology with large-scale clinical cohorts and biobanks to investigate human–pathogen interactions, with a particular focus on the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) system. He has led and contributed to large-scale research programmes including VaccGene, ISARIC-4C and COVIG, as well as collaborations with the UK Biobank and China Kadoorie Biobank. His work spans multiple infectious diseases and aims to translate insights from human genetics and immunology into improved vaccines, treatments and patient outcomes.
