Angela Brueggemann

Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Deputy Head of Department, Nuffield Department of Population Health

Professor Angela Brueggemann is an infectious disease epidemiologist whose research investigates how changes in bacterial populations influence human health and vaccine effectiveness. Her work focuses particularly on major respiratory and invasive disease pathogens, and uses large-scale genomic sequencing to understand bacterial evolution and disease transmission.

She leads the IRIS Consortium of over 120 investigators working in national microbiology reference laboratories in 30 countries across six continents, to monitor invasive respiratory infections and assess the impact of vaccination programmes worldwide. Her research also explores bacteriocins and bacteriophages, to understand their effect on bacterial biology and potentially identify new antimicrobial strategies.
