Dr Meera Chand leads UKHSA’s national specialist public health functions for emerging infections, including in recent years preparedness and response for mpox, avian influenza, high consequence infections and vector borne diseases. A consultant microbiologist by background, during the pandemic she led national work on assessing variants, and she is now the clinical lead for the UKHSA-wide pathogen genomics programme. Her personal specialist interest is in developing genomic surveillance capabilities for emerging risks.
She maintains honorary associations with Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and Imperial College London and is the co-lead for the new NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Public Health Genomics at the University of Birmingham.
