Lucy van Dorp

Principal Research Fellow, University College London

Lucy van Dorp is a group leader in microbial genomics at the University College London Genetics Institute, where she investigates how genetic diversity in pathogens is shaped by human and animal movement, drug use, and treatment strategies, bridging both modern and ancient microbial history.

Awarded a UCL Excellence Fellowship in 2020, she contributed extensively to genomic analyses of SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her research also includes sequencing historical Plasmodium vivax DNA from European specimens, revealing links between ancient European and American strains. A UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and recipient of the 2023 Balfour Lecture from the Genetics Society, she is also a strong advocate for women in STEM, actively mentoring and engaging in public outreach.
