Hemanth Tummala

Dr Hemanth Tummala is a Senior Lecturer in Genetics and Molecular Biology at the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London. His research programme elucidates the pathogenic mechanisms underlying telomere biology disorders (TBDs), with a specific focus on how telomere dysfunction drives premature ageing and aberrant human development.

His group employs integrated next-generation sequencing, patient-derived pluripotent stem cell models, and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing to systematically characterise novel genes and molecular pathways governing telomere maintenance.

His published work has identified causative mutations in telomere-related genes and delineated their role in replicative senescence, stem cell attrition, and age-related pathologies. By bridging rare disease genomics with fundamental mechanisms of human ageing, his research provides a molecular framework for understanding developmental defects and therapeutic targeting in TBDs and associated age-dependent disorders.
