Matthew Paul, following a PhD at the University of Leicester and a Royal Society Fellowship in Germany, has spent his career at Rothamsted Research. In 1999, he began working on trehalose 6-phosphate (T6P) sugar signalling. Through several productive collaborations and grants, particularly from UKRI-BBSRC, his team discovered that T6P inhibits SnRK1, a member of the conserved AMPK/SNF1 protein kinase master regulators of carbon and sugar, and energy homeostasis, in all organisms. Modification of T6P/SnRK1 increases wheat yields sustainably by more than 10% in both wet and dry seasons. This research has led to the formation of spin-out company SugaROx, co-founded by Matthew, which is developing T6P applications in a range of crops.
