Nicholas Thomson

Head of the Parasites and Microbes Programme, Wellcome Sanger Institute
Professor Nicholas Thomson is Head of the Parasites and Microbes Programme and a Group Leader at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. He is also Professor of Bacterial Genomics and Evolution at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. A microbiologist and bioinformatician, his research focuses on bacterial evolution and transmission, particularly in sexually transmitted and diarrhoeal diseases. His group uses genomic approaches to investigate how bacterial genomes vary across hosts, geography and time, and in response to therapeutic interventions. The group also develops methods to obtain pathogen genome data directly from clinical samples without the need for culture.
