Peter is Interim Chief Technology Officer at Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), the UK’s national institute for health data science, where he leads the organisation’s technology strategy to unlock the potential of health data to improve patient outcomes. He is responsible for the development and delivery of HDR UK’s core platforms, data infrastructure and wider technology ecosystem, enabling secure, ethical and scalable access to health data for researchers and innovators across academia, healthcare and industry. 

Peter leads the technology vision behind several national services including the Health Data Research Gateway, Cohort Discovery Service and Safe People Registry, which collectively support data discovery, streamline access processes and promote transparency and trust in the use of health data for research and clinical trials. His work focuses on building interoperable, reusable and community-driven infrastructure that reduces duplication of effort and supports a more connected UK health data ecosystem. 

He works closely with partners across the UK and internationally to advance open standards, federation and the responsible use of health data, helping to accelerate research and innovation through collaborative approaches to shared digital infrastructure. 

Prior to joining HDR UK, Peter led the Genome Analysis team at EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), where he worked on large-scale collaborative research data resources including the European Nucleotide Archive, ENSEMBL, and the COVID-19 Data Portal. He previously held research positions at University College London and University of Oxford, focusing on genomics and transcriptome evolution.
