Sarah Coupland

Professor Sarah Coupland is an Honorary Consultant Histopathologist at the Liverpool University Hospitals Group, UK, with expertise in ophthalmic pathology, haematopathology, molecular and digital pathology, and biobanking. She is also George Holt Chair of Pathology at the University of Liverpool (UoL), where she has worked for approximately 21 years. She has also led digital pathology at UoL, and has been involved in several multicentre computational pathology projects.

Professor Coupland is the current Registrar of the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) and President-Elect of RCPath. She is President of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland (PathSoc), but will demit this role in December 2026 to take on the RCPath President role.

In Autumn 2026, she will also commence a new position at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, enabling her to make the most of a significant opportunity as the Trust moves into its new home, the Oriel (officially named the Moorfields and UCL Centre for Eye Health), a new integrated centre for eye care research and education located at St Pancras Hospital in Camden, London. The proximity of the Oriel to RCPath will allow seamless working between the two organisations and other specialist centres, providing unique opportunities for collaboration.

Professor Coupland has published approximately 360 peer-reviewed scientific articles and authored approximately 150 chapters, including some within the UICC/TNM Staging System for Ophthalmic Tumours and the WHO 'Blue' Tumour Volumes (Eye, Haematopathology, Skin and Paediatric Cancers).
