Torsten Haferlach

Professor Torsten Haferlach spent the first part of his career as a medical doctor and haematologist at the university clinics in Kiel and Göttingen, and then at the university clinic in Munich (LMU), where he acted as both Senior Physician at the Department of Internal Medicine and Head of the laboratory for leukaemia diagnostics.

In 2005, he set up the Munich Leukemia Laboratory together with three colleagues from complementary disciplines. Today, the lab processes over 155,000 blood or bone marrow samples per year, his practice treats more than 5,000 patients, and more than 910 articles have been published in top-ranking, peer-reviewed medical journals since the lab's inception. He is author or co-author of more than 795 peer-reviewed articles, and also a co-author of the new WHO Classification 2022.

The Munich Leukemia Laboratory (MLL) has 400 employees and is a central reference laboratory providing diagnostic services for Germany, and also for international studies in haematology. The MLL offers services seven days a week, including cytomorphology, cytogenetics, FISH, immunophenotyping and molecular genetics, including also WGS and WTS.
